The Sustainability Leadership Institute is dedicated to serving as a center for building capacity among experienced and developing leaders who have embarked on the sustainability journey. Effective leadership for sustainability calls for the usual skills needed to engage others in actions that produce results for example, visioning, planning, organizing, communicating, directing, and monitoring accountability. In addition to these skills, sustainability leadership requires an expanded set of capabilities, skills and techniques that are grounded in a deeper understanding (cutting-edge social perspectives and underlying assumptions) about how people experience transformative change, where the wisdom for getting to the best solutions resides and how a leader engages most effectively with others to make things happen.

Primarily a research and educational organization, The Sustainability Leadership Institute invests its resources and talents in expanding the body of knowledge available to sustainability leaders in virtually any context they find themselves.

Specific ways we do this are:

• Observing, researching and reporting best practices (and resulting outcomes) demonstrated by sustainability leaders in the field.


• Developing resources (i.e., reference papers, tools and frameworks) and program materials uniquely designed for sustainability leaders.


• Providing a resource center for sustainability leaders through web-based information resources, presentations, classes, workshops and dialogue forums, and acting as sound board and collaborative strategist.


• Collaborating with leaders in the field who are actively involved in developing and implementing sustainability strategies designed to meet the particular needs of their organizations or communities; reporting learnings from these experiences (via publications and our website) to other sustainability leaders looking for inspiration and creative ideas that work.
